The internet has evolved into the world's reference section. The information you need is there; how to access it is the question. The answer is "search engines". A construction-related axiom, "get the right tool for the job", is appropriate. Find a specialized search engine dedicated to the category of data that you seek and plug away!

For your convenience, instead of simply providing a set of links to an assortment of search engines, I've placed their search boxes on this page. General Search Engines are available for generic searches. Metasearch Engines poll other search engines, thereby consolidating results gathered by a variety of different search technologies. Doing research? Use the appropriate Inquiry Engine. Use Specialty Search Engines to find current news, medical data, science, television listings, movie showtimes and reviews, videos, mp3s (music), pictures (images, graphics, etc.), federal, state, and local government information, auctions, etc. You can also use Translator Engines Ectaco or Babelfish to translate a word, a phrase, a paragraph, or an entire web page from and/or to any of dozens of different languages. Of course if you are having difficulty finding something on this Web Site, try the Site Search Engines.

General Search Engines

  • Google
Google, the premier search engine on the internet, uses a technology called PageRank to provide the basis for all of their web search tools. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search.
